Very low levels of PFAS/PFOA compounds have been detected in Lake Michigan, which is our drinking water source. The South Milwaukee Water Utility has detected PFAS and PFOA compounds at levels of around 2 parts per trillion in our drinking water, which is similar to levels detected by our neighboring Water Utilities.
Recently the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has suspended PFAS/PFOA testing for the South Milwaukee Water Utility since our levels are well below current State of Wisconsin drinking water standards. As the standards change, the South Milwaukee Water Utility will continue to work with the Wisconsin DNR and EPA on future testing.
